We are looking for a skilled PostgreSQL Database Administrator with 3–5 years of hands-on experience in PostgreSQL database administration, performance optimization, backup and recovery, replication, and troubleshooting.
The candidate should possess strong PostgreSQL administration fundamentals and be capable of independently troubleshooting database issues, performing routine DBA activities, and ensuring database availability, performance, and reliability. Basic knowledge of NoSQL databases, preferably MongoDB, is also required.
Key Responsibilities
PostgreSQL Database Administration
- Perform day-to-day PostgreSQL database administration, monitoring, and maintenance activities.
- Conduct regular database health checks and proactively identify potential issues.
- Independently troubleshoot database errors, connection issues, performance bottlenecks, and operational incidents.
- Manage database users, roles, permissions, schemas, and access privileges.
- Monitor database capacity, resource utilization, connections, and storage growth.
- Maintain PostgreSQL configuration parameters and recommend improvements based on workload requirements.
Backup, Restore, and Disaster Recovery
- Manage and monitor incremental and full database backups.
- Perform database restore operations and validate backup integrity.
- Troubleshoot backup failures and ensure backup jobs complete successfully.
- Participate in disaster recovery (DR) planning, recovery procedures, and DR testing.
- Understand and manage Write-Ahead Logging (WAL), WAL retention, archiving, and cleanup.
- Troubleshoot excessive WAL generation, replication slot retention, and associated disk-space issues.
Performance Tuning and Optimization
- Analyze slow queries and troubleshoot database performance issues.
- Perform query optimization using execution plans such as `EXPLAIN` and `EXPLAIN ANALYZE`.
- Identify indexing opportunities and optimize existing indexes.
- Monitor database statistics, locks, blocking sessions, long-running queries, and resource utilization.
- Perform routine maintenance activities, including VACUUM, ANALYZE, and table/index maintenance.
- Identify and resolve issues related to connection management, autovacuum, and table bloat.
Replication and High Availability
- Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot PostgreSQL streaming replication.
- Understand primary-replica architecture, replication lag, failover, and recovery procedures.
- Manage PostgreSQL logical replication, including publications and subscriptions.
- Troubleshoot logical replication errors, replication lag, and WAL retention issues.
- Understand replication slots and their impact on WAL management and disk utilization.
CloudNativePG (CNPG) and Migration
- Understand PostgreSQL deployment and administration in Kubernetes environments.
- Assist with or perform PostgreSQL migration from traditional deployments to CloudNativePG (CNPG).
- Understand CNPG cluster architecture, configuration, backup and recovery, and replica management.
- Troubleshoot database availability, failover, replication, and operational issues in CNPG environments.
- Work with DevOps and platform teams on database deployments, maintenance, and incident resolution.
MongoDB / NoSQL Knowledge
- Possess a basic understanding of NoSQL database concepts, preferably MongoDB.
- Understand MongoDB architecture, replica sets, and basic administration.
- Perform basic MongoDB monitoring, health checks, and troubleshooting.
- Understand indexing, query performance optimization, and database maintenance.
- Have basic exposure to MongoDB upgrades and performance optimization.
Required Skills
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience in PostgreSQL database administration.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, administration, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
- Practical experience with backup, restore, WAL management, and recovery procedures.
- Good understanding of streaming replication, logical replication, publications, and subscriptions.
- Experience with query tuning, indexing strategies, and database performance optimization.
- Knowledge of database security, roles, privileges, and connection management.
- Ability to independently analyze and troubleshoot database issues.
- Basic knowledge of Linux commands, shell scripting, and database automation.
- Basic knowledge of MongoDB or another NoSQL database; MongoDB is preferred.
- Good analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with PostgreSQL on Kubernetes or CloudNativePG (CNPG).
- Exposure to PostgreSQL version upgrades and database migration activities.
- Knowledge of high availability, disaster recovery, and replication architecture.
- Experience with database monitoring tools, alerting, and operational automation.
- Familiarity with production database support and incident management.
Candidate Expectations
- Strong hands-on PostgreSQL administration skills rather than theoretical knowledge alone.
- Ability to independently investigate and resolve routine database issues.
- Proactive approach to monitoring, preventive maintenance, and performance improvement.
- Willingness to participate in production support, incident resolution, and planned maintenance activities.
